Two Phases of TMJ Treatment
Dr. Barton approaches your TMJ treatment in two distinct phases. In the first phase, he will work to relieve the pain you experience on a daily basis. Once this has been accomplished, Dr. Barton will begin the second phase of treatment which seeks to correct the jaw alignment issues which cause your TMJ condition.
In order to alleviate your pain, Dr. Barton may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications or prescription muscle relaxants. In milder cases of TMJ, you may even be able to eliminate the pain by taking over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
When correcting the alignment issues with your jaw, Dr. Barton will generally employ the most conservative treatment methods possible. Your treatment plan will be customized to address the unique issues causing your jaw misalignment.
Whenever possible, Dr. Barton will use a special orthotic mouthpiece, called an occlusal splint, which is designed to relieve stress on the teeth, jaw muscles, and TMJ joint. If this does not properly align your bite, Dr. Barton may recommend one of the following TMJ treatments as an alternative:
- Dental restorations
- Physical therapy
